Now that everyone is back from the holidays, my apartment is once again filled with the sounds of video games blasting from the back of our absurdly large HD TV. It’s given me a whole new perspective on games: what you think of them when you’re not playing — when you’re not even in the same room.

Left4Dead, for example, sounds absolutely awful. Not only does it ring out with endless gunshots, but then there are the gut-wrenching vomiting noises — along with the inhuman screams — from enemies. I don’t recommend letting someone play in the background while you attempt to eat dinner.

My roomies and I have also been playing a lot of Prince of Persia. That would be a totally acceptable ambient noise game, except for the prince’s deadpan, out of place, and generally annoying commentary. Couldn’t he just shut up and let us play with the cool new space exploration mechanic? This is what I wonder while settling in with a book on the other site of the apartment.

Lastly, there have been a lot of Bioshock noises the last few days, as Scott has gone on his quest to complete the game once and for all. Those certainly aren’t happy noises, but I’m actually really enjoying them. I straight-up suck at first-person shooters, so some of the fun of Bioshock — with its eery setting and carefully crafted graphics — was lost for me when I played. But listening to the game, just listening to it, I get to appreciate the excellent writing, including all the wonderfully dark ramblings of the mad citizens of Rapture.

Then, of course, there’s always Rock Band 2, but I’m never in the other room for that one. Mediocre guitar FTW!

I want to take the ears off, but I can’t. I hop, and when I hop, I never get off the ground. It’s my curse, my eternal curse! I want to take the ears off but I can’t! It’s my curse! It’s my fucking curse! I want to take the ears off! Please! Take them off! Please!
