I think I must have been living under a rock the past few weeks — I have, and it’s called getting settled in San Fran, setting up life as a full-time freelancer, and studying for the GREs — because I was totally oblivious to the bizarreness that is Red Alert 3 until I received this link that chronicled Tim Curry’s tragic, unquestionably decline into the realm of ugly.

What the heck is up with this game? Will someone please explain how a company like Electronic Arts thinks it’s a good idea to release a faux-epic title featuring live action cut scenes, in which star multiple, famous, unattractive, old male actors across from unknown female actors who all look like porn stars? I am clearly missing something here, and it’s not how Curry transformed from a hottie with red lipstick and shapely legs to this frumpy sack of potatoes. Someone, please explain.

Red Alert was always known for cheese. Time travelling assassination? Tanks versus ever-increasingly bigger tanks? Dolphins as a unit of military force? Frankly I think this is an example of where EA’s habit for excess is being correctly applied. As long as the gameplay is good (which the beta seems to imply it is), then having incredibly hammy cinematics can only help the game’s image.

Ok, well I can certainly appreciate camp, though I still wish they’d gone for camp that involved actual women and not just walking blow-up dolls :). Looking forward to checking it out!

They’re an interesting choice of actresses but i’m guessing that the original/second Tanyas either weren’t available or willing to reprise their roles. As for the actresses themselves all three are fairly well known afaik – just not so much in acting circles :)

I agree about the campness. RA2 was pretty hilarious whilst the original RA was taken more seriously as an off-shoot of the C&C universe.

I always thought Red Alert’s campiness was broadly known D: I never liked it when I was in middleschool when I saw a cutscene for the first time on a friend’s computer monitor, but its not something I’ve ever really complained about, either.

I guess not everyone knows about RA.
