GameSetWatch has an interesting post up about Brooktown High and Western (vs. Japanese) dating games–of which, if you think about it, there aren’t very many. Of that short list, Simon does mention Sprung. I never thought I’d admit it, but I actually have played Sprung, and really enjoyed it. Why can’t I convince the hot snow bunny to get in the hot tub with me? Why?

Simon’s post also brings up the way a game like Brooktown High takes complex social interactions and breaks them down into trees of conversation choices. What would interest me is how those break downs are different in Western or Eastern games. Would game makers from different cultures adapt flirting into gameplay differently? What would it reveal about each of their social backgrounds? And is the overall goal (most obviously, bed) the same in all cases? Or is the means not the ends that change? Remember, we’re talking about the country that brought us “up-skirt” as a hyphenated word…

Does any of these games you mention have a meet-in-real-life component? I’m unfamiliar with them, but am curious about games that bring folks together away from the screen.

@Phalligator: No, you misunderstand. These are adventure games where the goal is wooing one of a group of women or girls. (I lie, there are some games where you’re wooing men/boys but they’re very very rare.)

Thanks Becca- I only ask because I work in public health and lots of us doing HIV and STD prevention projects are curious about using gaming as an educational avenue, and whether or not gamers (a diverse group no doubt) are a risk group. Public health, sadly but not surprisingly, revolves around funding for particular ‘groups.’ The question is not whether there should be health messaging targeting game players, but rather is the media suited for health messaging and would audiences swallow?

    What Becca said :).

Somewhat along those lines, Phalligator, I mentioned on the site a while ago that at last year’s Sex and Games Conference I was sitting with two women working on STD prevention for the government. Their question was more: how to sex-based games handle/address real-life health issues?
