As frequently as I find myself roaming Second Life these days, I’m always surprised by the variety of things I see. I don’t mean the normal stuff: detailed re-creations of real-life towns, or stunning, palm-tree dotted views. What I’m talking about it is the amazingly endless array of odd, misplaced, or otherwise abnormal tidbits users have taken the time to build and place around the world.

Just the other day, I came across both an ironically adorable teddy bear at the Xcite store info booth (Xcite makes animated genitals and sex toys for Second Life avatars), and this random box of heads at Avatar Island. Will someone please explain this to me? Granted, Avatar Island specializes in avatar make-overs–or at least creepily grafting real-life faces onto Second Life skins–so I guess there’s some connection. Still, the box is tucked behind the back of the main building, as if it were waiting to be unloaded… Kind of funny, but really, who makes these things?

Woohoo! You found my dumpster of heads! Sorry, I don’t have a special prize for you. However, I can offer a free ride on face making laboratory machine if you’d like (send me mail). That’s my face looking up at you there :)

Hey, Dave. I really appreciate the offer, but, to tell the truth, I’m envisioning my face giant on those Avatar Island posters. Eek :)! Any explanation for the dumpster, btw? Just fun? (I was trying to figure out some joke there that involved “a barrel of monkeys” to go along with the box of heads, but I gave up…)

  3. Dave Levinson Says:

Bonnie, the dumpster is supposed to reflect the old, discarded avatar heads replaced by the machinery. It’s somewhat of a humorous “easter egg”. This carries over from my long history in video game development where such things are common. The free face credit still applies. You won’t end up on a poster, I swear :)

  4. Bonnie Ruberg Says:

Lol, thanks. I’ll have to work on the courage to take you up on that offer!
