Over at Cnet there’s a fun feature up about celebrity Miis. Some of the examples in the photo gallery include Michael Jackson, Harrison Ford, and Peter Jackson, and most are spot-on. At least among my Wii-owning friends, it’s definitely true that making celebrity Miis is a regular pastime. One friend alone has sent over Hitler, Marx, and Borat, which makes for an interesting game of Wii Sports golf.

It’s interesting that–in my experience, at least–it’s a whole lot rarer to find people making female celebrity Miis than male. Is it because most Wii owners I know are guys? Is there something less entertaining about making caricatures of women? I guess that would make sense, considering how our famous women tend to be straight-up beautiful, and no so, um, facially interesting.

I can’t help but wonder if it’s not related to the Mii girlfriend phenomenon, though. You know what I’m talking about. You and your friends are sitting around making Miis of the people you know. Fine. But when a guy has to make a Mii of his own girlfriend, he stops dead. What if he makes her nose too big, or her cylindrical body too squat? What if he makes her ugly? It’s like walking through a girlfriend minefield. At least, that’s what boys think. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can’t be the only who has had to make her own Mii as her significant other retreats in boyish terror.

Oh man, I totally know what you mean about the Mii girlfriend phenomenon. I personally didn’t want to show my Mii of my girlfriend until she showed me the one she made herself so I could compare.

I also agree about the female celebs having less interesting faces thing. One of the main things about female Miis is that you cannot make them sexy. Or at least I’ve never seen it done. Given that all Miis have the same basic bust-hip ratio, there’s no way for a Mii to reflect America’s obsession with big boobies and round buns. As a result, all of the interestingness of a Mii has to be in the face, whereas American female celebs are all about plain jane faces with ridiculous secondary sexual characteristics. (Not always, but usually.)

Here’s one thing that might be interesting though: Do you think someone could make a good Maggie Gyllenhaal or Christina Ricci? Those girls are known for their ‘weird’ faces. That could make their Miis much more interesting than, say, a Lindsay Lohan or Pam Anderson.

Watch it, I adore Maggie Gyllenhaal :).

That’s the other interesting thing about the Mii girlfriend phenomenon: what happens when girlfriends (or girls in general) make themselves. I’ve only seen one or two girl-made Miis come out well. Most are actually too pretty–not in the body, like you said, but in the face. Then the problem is, there’s no way to tell someone, “Hey, I changed your Mii, because you’re actually not that cute.” Ouch!
