A long time ago we talked about sexual orientalism and what makes Asian women (at least, the idea of Asian women) so appealing to American men. Back then, someone brought up the counter-argument that Asian women aren’t any more sexualized than any other ethnicity in America; everyone has different tastes. Fine, I thought, maybe I was just too wrapped up in Asian-derived culture. Maybe I had Asian vision.

Then, the other day in the city, I came across the “bodywork” ads in the back of The Village Voice. True, the section features women of all ethnicities. But there’s a whole separate area for Asian “massage,” not to mention plain old “hot Asian.” I guess Asian women really do have their own, unique appeal.

My bigger question is, how do sex workers (or papers) get away with these “bodyworks” ads? Some are subtle, but some definitely aren’t. I mean, more power to them, but most of these don’t even say “escort,” just “passionate date” or “romantic interlude.” Then of course there are the intense ass shots. But if no one’s complaining, I guess, why not?

Maybe we’re into Asians because thats our sexual orientalation.

Any personal weigh-ins? I can’t say I have a thing for Asian women myself. I mean, not there’s anything wrong with them, but my thing is mostly redheads. Then again, since I am one, there’s probably something serious strange about that ;).

I like Asian women, personally. But I really think it comes down to the fact that men are ridiculously easy, in general, and tend to fall for broad-stroke stereotypes much more easily than we women, who I think tend to be more emotionally analytical about sex rather than visual/conceptual. With most guys I know, all it takes is a “nurse costume” or “secretary costume” to turn an average girl into a hot one.

This guy I know had a female friend who was, psychologically, a total dependent mess, like, the opposite of girlfriend material. But when he found out her dark secret– i.e., she enjoys playing a dominatrix at sex clubs to blow off steam– he was suddenly very, very sexually interested in her, despite himself.

The servile “Asian Bodywork” type is another stereotype that I’d assume gets men’s imaginations working. If I myself can be permitted to stereotype, it seems to me that Asians in the city are almost ruthlessly adept at finding a niche wherein they can gain economic or enterprise success, even if that means exploiting American perceptions of them– hence the nine million handbag knockoff shoppes in Chinatown, the fact I have ten–count ’em, ten Chinese restaurants in a three-block radius, and the fact that there are pages and pages of happy ending massages being advertised in the Voice.

Like you, though, I wonder how they can get away with posting ads that are obviously for escorts– of course, they get away with it quite flagrantly on Craigslist, so maybe it’s just an issue of the volume of prostitutes being so high there’s very little the cops, who generally have more pressing issues to tackle, can do.

Hmm, I never thought to check Craigslist for something like that. Are they listed there as “bodywork” too?
