Oh my God, an entire site dedicated to game cakes? I’m super psyched! Michael Fahey from Kotaku and I have been conversing about our love of game cakes ever since I went crazy, compiled two huge game-cake mosiacs, and then wrote a whole Joystiq column about the culture of game cakes. Now he’s starting up Gamecakes.com, a veritable “cake showcase.” There’s not much there now, but when things do get rolling, yours truly will be on the blogger list. Cake pictures, cake testimonials, cake recipes. Expect my fandom to reach a whole new level of weird.
I’m back from GDC, attempting to sort through normal life (and all these business cards!). While I get my head to stop spinning, here’s some more of my Joystiq coverage from the event:
-Beer makes even mobile gaming more attractive (on the Mobile Game Innovation Hunt)
-First women’s suffrage and now this (on GDC merch for the ladies)
-McGonigal’s new ARG looking for answers to the oil crisis (on World without Oil)
-Clowns falling down stairs: the ultimate physics game (on Matthew Wegner, Fun-Motion.com, and the unspoken sadism in physics games) -Sony’s ‘Home’ sex haven in disguise (on… well, that one pretty much speaks for itself)
-Fils-Aime? Do I have a Reginald Fils-Aime? (on spotting Reggie’s driver outside the Harrison keynote)
-Ray finds her first line a GDC women’s restroom (on the conference gender divide)
-Miyamoto mii graces Nintendo chests (on the covet-able gear at the Nintendo booth)
-M.M.O.F.O’s and other video-game thugs (on Gangs of GDC)
Here I am at GDC, plugging along, enjoying the sun. Luckily, we’re still in that calm before the storm; things are scheduled to explode like a soda can in a freezer tomorrow morning. I’ve written a few short posts for Joystiq, one on Trip Hawkins and mobile games, one on getting your indie game published, and one on Manifesto and feeling sick to your stomach. That last bit will make more sense when you read, I promise. Anyways, it’s actually been pretty fun to blog. Now I’ve just got to keep more ear out for more things worth blogging. To the batmobile!
Now up over at Joystiq is my biweekly “Playing Dirty” piece, “Night Elves on Their Knees.” It’s a look at the Warcraft-based porn series Whorecraft–with more of an angle toward content rather than production, which is what Brian Crecent’s Kotaku feature mainly focused on–and a nod to some video-game slash. The overall point of the piece is to ask the question, is fandom sexy?
In other news, Scott and I are headed back home tomorrow to Philadelphia, fom where we fly to San Francisco for GDC. I’ll be there representing Gamasutra, Joystiq, and possibly New Scientist. I foresee the kind of fun that, when it’s done, you need to crawl into a corner and sleep it off for at least a few weeks. Anyways, I’m looking forward to meeting all the I-know-the-name-but-not-face folks I didn’t run into in Montreal. That’s always an excellent game.
