It occurred to me today that I’ve been delinquent and still haven’t posted about GDC. Well, I’m going to continue that grand tradition of delinquency, at least for a couple more days, with one glorious exception: the life-shattering news that, despite years of scientific research to the contrary, it turns out women don’t like sex on roller coasters.

How do I know this? Luckily for me and my easily-angered tummy, it’s not first-hand experience. Nope, it came straight from the mouth of Noah Dudley of Naughty America–that MMOEG (massively-multiplayer online erotic game) for the average American. Apparently, in earlier patches of the game, you could have sex just about everywhere: on a rollercoaster, in the street, in a box with a fox in socks. According to Dudley though, that “Why don’t we do it in the road?” attitude turned off female players.

In order to get an even gender ratio going in the game, Naughty America had to limit sex, more or less, to the bedroom. We could have a whole discussion about how boundaries are sexy. We could have a whole other discussion about recreating real-life social expectations in games. But right now, instead of either one, let’s just giggle at the messy physics involved in sex on a roller coaster.

That bites. I mean, I don’t really have the intention of playing NA, but it seems like there could be a thrill aspect to have sex in place you wouldn’t in real life.

I think you wrote about this elsewhere, or maybe that was someone else. I think there is a more elegant but staggered solution to this problem than just limiting it to the bedroom. Something more contextual. The thing I like about this blog, you make design problems seem sexy.

This makes me think of that movie with the obsessed boyfriend. I can’t remember right now what it’s called.

The only way I’d WANT to play some sex game with internet weirdos is if I could make my character do it in weird places. Then again, I’m the kind who puts her Sims in tiny closets and then takes away the door, watching them cry and pee themselves in the dark. I guess I’m “sexy” in the kinda way that the creepy old library aide who chaperones all the school field trips is “sexy.” Sexy enough for jail!

Hmm, must have been someone else. He mentioned it during the Sex & Games round table, so it’s definitely possible some more speedy blogger picked up on it first. I thought about making it a Joystiq post during the conference, and then I thought, wow, that’s random.
