Apparently I totally spaced on today’s post: end of the semester, literary magazine just came out, excuses, excuses.

Anyways, just up at Joystiq is my Playing Dirty column, “Dracula Wears Eyeliner,” the first piece in a two-part look at the changing art style (and gender implications) of the Castlevania series.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m a huge sucker for men in makeup, so don’t be surprised if I start drooling…

Alucard needs to expend precious blood in order to get an erection, and in SotN I could sense a sexual tension between him and Marie, that he wanted to have sex with her, but it just wasn’t logistically feasible. Its funny, because getting the spike armor, then the blue ring, then collecting all your dads body parts is logistically feasible, but erectile function isn’t. He’s a tragic character. Plus, he associates his mom with a succubus in a dream. A real puzzle box, that Alucard.

Maybe “a” should be a fourth prefix to complimento hetero, homo and bi, when categorizing sexuality. I mean it is, but not in a social psych sense.

Uh, Bonnie, what is this “homoerotic” element in Stoker’s Dracula you are talking about? Do you know something about Renfield and Van Helsing that you want to tell us?

PS – Comments I post from Firefox are not showing up here. I had to switch to I.E. to get this one through… and that’s just wrong.

Hmm, that is wrong. So very wrong. I will have to bring that to attention of my man slave/web designer.
