I’ve recently been talking with games writer Alejandro Garcia Williams from EGM en Español, who’s putting together a piece about gay and lesbian video gamers. He’s asked me to ask you guys a question. Respond, and your words of wisdom may end up in Electronic Gaming Monthly… in Spanish!
So, Alejandro would like to know, which video game characters do you gay and lesbian gamers find the most attractive? For the sake of fun, I’m going to throw in that annoying little tag-along: “Why?”
If you’re gay, you can of course answer for yourself. If you’re not, but have gay gamer friends who’ve openly discussed the objects of their game-related drooling in the past, feel free to tell us the story.
If you’d prefer not to out yourself in the comments section of a games blog - or if you’re overwhelmingly embarassed to admit you fantasize about Tingle - not to worry. Emails, even anonymous emails, are welcome. And remember: Heroine Sheik aims to be a safe space for homosexual gamers. If there was a way to hang one of those nifty stickers on the website, it’d be done.

Well, I’m queer, but don’t use the label lesbian.
I think Jill from RE is attractive. She’s intelligent, kicks zombie ass, and looks great in her STARS uniform.
KOSMOS from Xenosaga. Loyalty, a badass, confidence. Not to mention, she’s a lot of woman (for a robot.)
Okay, I don’t think I’ve ever talked about my crushes on (not real) characters before, and now they’re broadcasted on the internet.

I could say lesbian, but I feel that it doesn’t represent the full extent as to what my orientation consists of. I want to leave things open as far as gender is concerned. I’m more oriented towards women, yes, but also go for genderqueer.
To make things even more complicated, my current partner is biologically male.

That’s funny (I mean, it’s not funny), I recently went to a concert by a lesbian vocalist, and she was telling the crowd how confusing it had been for her, after being gay (and an activist for gay rights) her whole life, suddenly to be dating a trans guy. She said they went to her normal hot spots, and people were like, “Yo, who’s that straight couple?” It’s a combination I hadn’t really thought of, but it certainly does complicate a term like “lesbian.”

qDot, that’s just confusing. Also, I wanted to let you know I made some revisions to that sex and interactivity piece for The Escapist I had mentioned I might send your way (It briefly discussed sex in MMO’s, so I figured you were my man.). The MMO stuff has been cut down, it focuses more on one-person sex games, and (hopefully) it ended up pretty non-offensive, though (again, hopefully) still thought-provoking. Thanks though!

If I had to name one woman I thought was attractive from a game…
…hrm. That’s difficult. One downfall of having vast experiences throughout all of gaming means that, on top of all the stuff you have to essentially ignore to not kick and scream at the sexist programmers/devs (or whoever decides to make the armor models for females far, far, far more revealing (Chief Brigadier’s set, WoW))…end rant, back ot purpose.
I’d have to say…Rikku! Yes…if I used ‘hot’ to describe anyone, it’d be Rikku, X-era (not X-2). The curves are perfect, her eyes are alluring but not all-encompassing, and the very shape of her face leads one to such thoughts as to feel dirty. >.>
That and her attitude is cute. ^^;
Course, i’m probably forgetting a lot of things. Having a bad memory seems to do that.

Hey. I also don’t like using “gay” and “lesbian” to talk about such things, because it encourages the black and white view of sexuality, that everyone’s either gay or straight, but I guess if you’re looking for answers specifically from people who identify as gay or lesbian, than that’s understandable. While I’m almost only attracted to males, I think that most people are bisexual to some degree.
In video games, FFX’s Wakka and Rikku were hot. Wakka’s char design is just dead sexy, and his stubborn brutish and religious side makes him cuter. I like Rikku’s attitude, personality, and design. I love mechanical geniuses/inventors, hence I also am attracted to Breath of Fire III’s Momo, Chrono Cross’ Luccia, and ~especially~ Chrono Trigger’s Lucca. Japanese games tend to have these cocky yet dorky inventor geniuse types that totally float my boat.
Harvest Moon’s Kai, and FFVII’s Quistis and Zell were fine, too. Quistis is calm and collective, yet also full of tender love and care as well as deadly skill. Zell is so full of energy and vigor. Hmm.. Also, Chrono Cross’ Doctor and Norris. Oh, and Eternal Darkness’ Kareem, just because of looks. Romancing Saga III’s Nora and Harid, even though they’re 16-bit sprites. Who else… SSX Tricky’s Mac, Kaori, Brody, and Moby.
That’s all I can think of now.

Hey, Zack, thanks for your suggestions. I couldn’t agree with you more when you say you see people on a sexual spectrum and not black and white, straight or gay. Alejandro asked about gay and lesbian gamers, and I’m just spreading the word :-). At the moment I think it’s a big enough step for EGM, in whatever language, to be interested in homosexual gamers (considering that, in our culture at large, it’s very hard to get people to listen to the concerns of the bisexual community).

Well, I’m not a lesbian (I’m one of those pesky bisexuals), but for what it’s worth:
Samus Aran (Metroid Series) — Professional, no fear, compassionate, honourable, self-sufficient, strong, capable.
Alexandra Roivas (Eternal Darkness Sanity’s Requiem) — Intelligent, courageous, strong, gorgeous.
Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil 4) — I haven’t played the game, but he just looks so good and his fashion sense is great.
Paine (Final Fantasy X-2) — Never played this game. I’m going purely for looks and what I infer from them. She seems strong, capable, and looks like she can kick ass.
Asuka Kazama (Tekken 5) — She’s cute and kicks ass. She also has spunk. I like her alternate outfit the best.
Nina Williams (Tekken series) — She’s gorgeous, cool, strong, and focused.
Steve Fox (Tekken 4, 5) — Pretty boy boxer. I think he looks especially good in his standard outfit in Tekken 4.
The main guy from the Onimusha series — Again, I haven’t played the games, but I really like Takeshi Kaneshiro, the actor who’s face they used for the game. He’s gorgeous.
The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater) — So honourable it hurts. I have to give her much respect for that. She’s also really hot, has great fighting skills, has a very commanding presence, and is just soo cool.
Alucard — Castlevania Symphony of the Night — Tragic, sword-wielding half-vampire — what’s there not to love?
Akira (Rival Schools) — She’s so cute and tough. Though you don’t know she’s a she from the beginning of the game, you can tell that this fighter is very driven. I also love her outfit. Motorcycle leathers are hot.
Sakura (Street Figther series) — She’s cute and is full of life, energy, and cheerfulness.
There are more that I’ve no doubt missed, but those are my favourite characters in terms of appearance.
